Disinfection

Disinfection is the procedure that with the use of disinfecting substances reduces the presence of pathogens, destroying or inactivating a significant but not absolute proportion of them (in this case sterilization would be discussed).

Disinfection shall not be carried out without adequate preventive cleaning in order to prevent dirt residues from affecting its effectiveness. Cleaning is a preliminary operation and is essential for the subsequent steps of sanitisation and disinfection.

For the use of hand and surface disinfectants, but in general for that of all disinfectants, the indications on the label must be followed carefully, respecting the method of application, the quantity to be used and the recommended contact times.

The frequent and excessive use of hand disinfectants can lead to even important toxic effects; absorption by skin contact should not be underestimated, especially as regards ethanol and isopropyl alcohol. In addition, the aggressive action of alcohol reduces the natural defenses of the skin and can cause the onset of resistant microorganisms with consequent complications in preventing future infections

Always consider that children are more at risk than adults from the inappropriate use of hand disinfectants.
